Subway franchise restaurants are based in Milford, Connecticut. There are five other regional centers to support Subway’s growing international operations. All these centers and the main office operate 25,000 sandwich restaurants in over 85 countries around the world. Subway franchise is reported to be the fastest growing franchise in the world and have more chains compared to McDonalds in United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. In 2005 only, Subway Company managed to add 2,000 of the food outlets. Subway has been voted as number one franchise in Entrepreneur magazine 14 times until 2006.
Founded by Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck in 1965, the outlet started as an attempt by DeLuca to find extra money so he will be able to survive his college days. The small sandwiches managed to get him through college and even become the top franchise in the world. Analyst reported the success of Subway franchises is due to the health consciousness of consumers these days. This is owing to the story of Jared Forgle, a student of Indiana University. Jared managed to loose 245 pounds, which is approximately 115 kilograms in the year 1999. Jared did this by following a diet that consists mostly of Subway sandwiches. Subway used this story to illustrate the healthy image it bears. Jared was later made as the spokesperson of Subway.
When Subway was founded, the original name was Pete’s Super Submarine. This name was later changed to Pete’s Subway and then amended again to be just Subway. While many restaurants take a more stylish approach to the interior of the restaurant, Subway decided to take the New York City Subway as decoration motive for its restaurant. Subway even named a sandwich BMT, which is after Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit.
As a worldwide franchise company, the Subway menus are made to suit the specific regions. As an example, turkeys are commonly used in the menus for branches in North America. However, turkeys are uncommon in Asia or Africa so any menu that uses turkey is changed to be chicken. For menus in Muslim countries like Iran, pork components are removed from the menu.
Subway franchises uses and implements the slogan ‘Eat Fresh’ to illustrate how every sandwich is made using fresh baked bread only, complete with fresh ingredients and made in front of the customers to suit their exact specifications. This is to ensure that the quality and the value Subway franchises hold will not put at risk.
